“And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manager, because there was no place for them in the inn.” Luke 2:7 (ESV)

On December 17th, 1990, one week before Christmas Eve, I gave birth to my firstborn daughter. I’m not comparing my experience with Jesus’ birth, but I’m certain Mary felt the same pains of childbirth.

As a first time mom, I had decided, “no epidural for me.” A natural delivery all the way. I bore down and grit my teeth. And I’m sure my screams filling the sterile hospital room shook the walls. The five hours of excruciating pain was worth every second when out popped a 6 lb. 7 oz. baby girl with ten fingers and ten toes, and a full head of downy black hair. I stared down at my papoose, swaddled in her flannel blanket, and joy flooded my soul.

The hustle and bustle began. Family and friends arrived bearing gifts. No, not gold, frankincense, and myrrh (mer). But among the pile of gifts, was one I cherished. After the guests left, I read the book by Robert Munsch, “Love You Forever.” With tears streaming down my cheeks, I rocked my daughter back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And I sang her this special song.

I’ll love you forever,
I’ll like you for always,
As long as I’m living
my baby you’ll be.

Katelyn, you were the best Christmas present I ever received. Okay, delivered.
